What counts as a day of sea service?
This can be a complex answer, here is the regulation if you'd like to read for yourself. However, in summary, 4 hours on the water for a vessel less than 100 tons, 8 hours on the water for a vessel greater than 100 tons, and 60% of your military sea-time. You can also sometimes get credit for sea service by teaching a course, or doing "closely related service" in the shipyard or for dockside attraction vessels. Here are more FAQs about sea service.
How much sea time do I need for my license?
This will depend on the license you are going for. Generally they are categorized by route (inland, near coastal, oceans), tonnage (100 tons, 200 tons), and role (master, mate). In general, key milestones for sea service start at 360 days for an inland master/near coastal mate. For more details you can peruse the checklist for your specific license here.
What is the deal with drug testing?
All mariners must be subject to random testing, and for application purposes, this may be documented by a pre-employment drug test or proof of enrollment in a random program. You can use form 719P to document this, and here are more FAQs about drug testing.
Are there any resources for License Application Support?
I highly recommend MM-SEAS, they have license application software (for free) which helps you put together a perfect application. If you choose, you can also hire them for more support. They also have a great blog which covers current events in the licensing world.

Diamond Marine Services has a great towing program for experienced mariners looking to get into towing and they also help with credentialing for these mariners.
What should I do about the First Aid and CPR requirement?
It is very important that your First and CPR be Coast Guard Approved. This is met by either a Red Cross in person course, or alternatively a group like Emergency University, which is one of the few approved online courses.
