Workforce & Fleet Partners

Practical Navigator is proud to serve as a key operational resource hub for the traditional sail and military to mariner communities - building the maritime workforce for the decades ahead.

Tall Ships America Partnership

Practical Navigator is a sponsor of the Tall Ships America conference and a heavy supporter of Tall Ship students.  We provide substantial discounts on tuition to Tall Ships America members. Members can contact the instructor for the coupon code.

  • 200 ton mate - for those with 360 days of sea service and having met the 100 ton requirements.
  • 500/1600 ton mate and master - we provide free license preparation resources for these advanced level topics.

Military to Mariner Resources

With the approval of USCG Credentialing Assistance in early 2022, Coast Guard members can pursue their license at zero cost to the member.  Here is more about the CA process guide from Forcecom.

All Practical Navigator online courses are approved for CG Credentialing Assistance.

Your full time ESO will have the latest information about how to apply for CA.  Additionally, the CG Military to Mariner program, available at [email protected] is a great resource for questions about the process.

The latest link to FORCECOM's credentialing assistance page is here.

The military to mariner pathway:
  • 100 ton master - great for those with 360 days of sea service (inland) or 720 days of service in the deck department (near coastal)
  • Assistance towing - great for job security - no experience required and allows you to salvage/tow for money
  • 200 ton upgrade - for those with more tonnage and sea time.
  • Master unlimited - for senior deck officers transitioning at the O5/O6 level.  License prep resources are available.

Deck Watch Officer (Commericial) Program

According to the DWO Instruction (COMDTINST 16672.5E):

Members who have taken a commercial course approved by NMC equivalent to the Q100 exam are required to submit a copy of a signed certificate from an NMC approved course provider to CGI via the member's ESO. A current list of approved courses may be found on the NMC website.

This provides a pathway for CIC personnel, remote stations, reserve units, or others to take a merchant mariner course such as ours to obtain DWO equivalency.

Contact the instructor for a discount code on the Rules of the Road preparation course and more details about the testing options.

Watch Officer Mentor Program (WOMP)

This program is designed to help new watch officers/coxswains succeed in their first tour aboard a ship or in a new role.

We have full remote radar, ECDIS, and visual simulation capabilities through laptop/tablet simulation. We have a group of recently retired cutter commanding officers with a desire to help new watch officers.  We know it is hard to find racks or training opportunities these days.

This commercial, off-the-shelf training is purchase-card approved, and can be tailored to watch officers on any American flagged vessel.  Topics include:
  • Maneuvering in accordance with COLREGS
  • Relative motion principles
  • Radar tuning and settings for detecting faint, fast moving contacts
  • Calling the CO for contact reports
  • Navigation brief construction or presentation (voyage planning)
  • Bridge resource management
  • Multitasking during busy operations
  • Operating in or near restricted visibility
  • Operating in congested waterways
  • Weather & oceanography fundamentals

Contact the instructor to set something up for your watch officers.

License Administration:

A great resource is MMSEAS which offers free license software for Tall Ships America Members as well as military to mariner students.

Military to mariner candidates can avoid paying government fees and can learn more about drug testing waivers here.
